ITEM: P19 Only recently
acknowledged as a unique design this 2nd
pattern crossguard by WKC was only used for
a very short period and as a transitional or
experimental offering early in the period.
It is found on army daggers by Weyersburg
produced around 1935/36 before
standardisation was introduced and the
introduction of the more commonly observed
3rd pattern tomahawk or hatchet headed
design. Matched with a tapered tang early
blade and early pommel/scabbard this
particular piece still shows that the firm
was hand enhancing the fittings at this
later stage of production. The quality base
metals, crisp design to the eagle and the
attention to detail taken by the chiseleurs
working for WKC at the time is reflected by
most examples found today of this rare
pattern crossguard. It can also be found on
various smaller independent makers producing
early in the period who purchased parts
directly from Weyersburg.
