ITEM : L101 - EBERLE Pre 1935 Brazilian
Admirals Naval Dagger
This dagger was made by "EBERLE" which was a
company founded by a
German family, late 19th century, in the South of Brazil, in the
state of Rio Grande Do Sul, city of Caxias Do Sul. They where
contracted to make silverware and items for military use such as
daggers and swords under a contract drawn up by the Brasilian
Government with England and Germany. This dagger pre-dates WW2
and can be attributed to being an admirals dagger due to the
grip configuration. This dagger was made with two colours of
grip, black & white, and by regulation only Admirals could use
the black variety. The blade etch contains the lettering "EUB"
which stands for ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL or UNITED STATES OF
BRASIL and was used to denote the old Brasilian Republic pre
1935. After 1935 the name was
changed to RFB or REPUBLICA FEDERATIVA DO BRASIL. The Brasilian
coat of arms can be seen depicted on the blade etch and also on
the dagger pommel, the initial EUB Republic was formed Nov 15th
1889, this dagger was made sometime between those dates and has
remained in excellent condition.
The dagger itself has full brass fittings
throughout, the grip is triple gold wire wrapped, jet
black and probably trolon ( although I have never had it apart
). The crossguard and pommel are hand enhanced with outstanding
quality synonymous with German manufacture. The pommel bears an
anchor with chain to the reverse and the afore mention Brasilian
coat of arms to the front. The crossguard is equipped with a
blade retention to scabbard mechanism that is fully functional
and original green felt washer is still in good shape and
intact. The blade has a mirrored etch on both sides of the blade
depicting a sailing ship, anchor, scroll work and coat of arms.
It does show some dark spots and may clean if required. It is
also maker marked "EBERLE" MARCA REGISTRADA or REGISTERED
TRADEMARK. The scabbard appears to be leather coated wood based
and each of the brass fittings is retained by a side screw, the
leather is in good shape and fully intact and the ball has no
dents, it is also etched EBERLE to throat retaining plate.
Absolutely stunning workmanship, on a very early,
high ranking officers dagger.
