This M34 early Fire helmet was a pre-cursor
to the common and more standard Fire helmet
that has the usual pairing of police and
shield decals. The large oversized Swastika
decal was used up until 1937/8 before
companies switched and due to the early
configuration, these helmets are relatively
scarce. What is also interesting about the
decals on this helmet is that the shield
appears to have suffered from heat damage
which is somewhat in keeping with the nature
of the helmets purpose. With some black
paint loss to areas of the dome which is
mostly from resting wear, the helmet remains
in good condition and bears the makers
stamps and identification numbers "DRP Thale"
and a large "A". With the original liner and
drawstring intact this helmet was obviously
well worn during the period based on the
wear to the interior liner. Also the
aluminium comb remains in place on this
helmet, so many are removed over the years,
and this one remains original to the helmet.
The swas decals on these early fire helmets came in two sizes with the one
shown above being the larger version, it is
a scarce variant as the decals / helmets
would have been redundant or reworked with
the introduction of the later police and
shield decals, when the fire service was
integrated with the German police in 1938.
This coupled with the relatively short
production period 1934-1938 explains the
limited numbers found in collections today.
There are several variants of this type of helmet. was £495 now
