ITEM:
D112 A decent example
of the Weyersburg and Kirschbaum Cie or WKC
mid period production German Army Officers
dagger. Fitted with a wonderful burnt
orange type B grip in factory condition with
the exception of a very small and stable
hairline to the rear upper and matched with
an early tapered tang blade, it is possible
to date this dagger to late 1936 or 1937.
The blade is excellent, the odd light runner
mark and very small abrasions that you
need to look for, it has a fully burnished
trademark and good visible cross grain. The
hilt fittings and scabbard are all typical
WKC parts from the period, from the small
leafed 12 segmented pommel, the ferrule,
cross guard and down to the twin flat headed
side screws to the scabbard and scabbard
bands, these parts are all recognizable as
having been manufactured by Weyersburg. The
detail to the fittings is good, crisp and
detailed, no hand work evident as this
dagger was from a period when the factories
had stream lined production with simplified
moulds and casting techniques that negated
the need for hand finishing, but it is still
a very good example of the Tomahawk style
hatchet type 3 cross guard from Weyersburg
that would remain in production for the next
4/5 years. The scabbard bands are very well
detailed as well with hand finishing evident
to the seams suggesting the scabbard was
utilized from earlier stock and is often the
style of scabbard encountered with the type
2 WKC cross guard from 1936. The plating to
the fittings is good, a little frosting
remaining in places but certainly not up to
the thick and heavy plating techniques of
the initial WKC daggers, there is a rough
patch or surface mark to the upper right
wing of the eagle and the scabbard does have
door dings to the lower third and has been
flattened towards the tip, this does not
affect the insertion of the dagger into the
scabbard. A fine looking and early
contribution of this final design by
Weyesburg, not without a few flaws but with
the bonus of an excellent tapered tang
blade, very attractive grip and a nice dark
patina.
