ITEM:
D110 A slant gripped
German army dagger from Gustav Spitzer. This
initial fist contribution from the company
dates to 1935 and is fitted with parts
purchased or sourced from E-Pack. All parts
including the scabbard are early Pack and
are matched with a polished blade clearly
marked and advertising the Spitzer company.
Many smaller firms opted for this option of
using Pack fittings on their very early
production daggers before exploring
alternative and unique configurations. The
grip is the slanted variety and the blade
tang is tapered as they both should be, the
grip is a fantastic tangerine orange, a
little lighter to the rear than the front
but is in excellent condition, there is a
small amount of play evident on the grip
assembly due to wear to the leather blade
washer / buffer and the fact that the pommel
has never been turned or removed and is
tight, forcing this pommel to solve the
slightly loose grip could result in damage
or unforeseen issues and is best left well
alone. The fittings are brass based
throughout and retain much of the silver
plate with a little wear evident on some
raised areas, the pommel edge and scabbard
bands etc. The blade maker mark is the large
Spitzer TM, burnished and very clear, the
blade is excellent, a few marks caused by
the internal scabbard runners and a couple
of minor dark patches but very minor and it
has the majority of the cross grain
remaining. The cross guard is good, not
heavily enhanced but the details are clearly
visible, a little wear to the raised areas
but no dents, dings or damage. The scabbard
has suffered with plating loss to either
side, mainly to the hanger ring side, there
are no dents. The throat is retained by two
flush mounted recessed screws.
This is a very nice early dagger, with a
highly desirable mixture of early fittings
and a slant grip. It displays very well, and
is from a relatively scarce and smaller
manufacturer who wanted to offer a product
at least in line or on a level with products
being offered by much larger companies.
