ITEM:
D108 This configuration
of army dagger from Paul Weyersburg is
extremely rare. The company was not
successful in securing an army dagger
manufacturing contract in 1937 so all of
their daggers are pre this date. The
majority found today tend to be fitted with
slant grips and with either a WKC or
Weyersburg early cross guard. However they
did assemble a slightly later contribution
in 1936, rarely seen and almost unheard of
in this condition, shown below. The dagger
features a nickel plated tapered tang blade
stamped with the smaller company trademark,
it is in excellent condition with the very
slightest of blunted tips ( being extremely
picky here ), a 12 leaf hand enhanced and
stippled pommel, type B caramel or orange
toned grip and a lovely Weyersburg enhanced
2nd Pack cross guard with all of the typical
traits including the lazy eagles eye and
upturned beak typical of Weyersburg
enhancement. The features on both the pommel
and cross guard are very well defined, very
heavily silvered and with a nice recessed
dark patina that accentuates the raised
areas. The dagger is completed with a
Weyersburg scabbard, a large over sized
scabbard throat retained by two flat headed
side screws, this scabbard also features the
flaw, known to advanced collectors as a
typical trait for Weyserbugs early
scabbards, it is a vertical line that is
evident on the scabbard shell, just below
the throat and caused by the firms cast when
producing the scabbard. The scabbard is
excellent, detailed wide leafed scabbard
bands with hand finished acorns to the seams
and heavily silvered. A perfect match for
the rest of the dagger. This piece is a
delight, it has rarity, condition and is
extremely pleasing on the eye. You will be
very hard pressed to find another one for
sale anywhere and for type collectors, one
of the hardest configurations to find.
