ITEM:
D106 - SOLD An outstanding
Heer dagger from the Robert Klaas company.
Assembled very early in 1936 this dagger
bears many similarities to the very first
style army dagger manufactured by the
company. It is hand enhanced throughout and
has an early tapered tang possibly nickel
plated blade marked with the small version
storks + name trademark. This dagger is
heavily silvered , brass based and with a
lovely dark patina in the recessed which
enhances the high relief had work applied to
all the parts. The swastika sits on a raised
platform, the scabbard bands are stamped
with the typical firms asterisks and the
chisel work to the cross-guard really makes
the eagle relief pop out from the background
base. The pommel is a 12 leaf variation,
crisp and detailed and matched to a type B
grip which is a lovely tangerine orange and
a little lighter to the rear. The grip also
has an angled interior cut to fit over the
tapered tang of the blade which has not been
executed exactly according to plan, it means
the grip / ferrule sits at a slight angle
rather than face on. Nothing serious but and
hardly noticeable but needs to be mentioned.
The scabbard is excellent, heavily silvered
with zero dents, dings or plating lift or
bubbling, the throat is retained by two flat
headed small side screws, typical of Klass
production as are the applied asterisks to
hide the scabbard band seams to both
opposite edges. The blade is actually quite
hard to determine if it is plated or
polished, in either case it is virtually
flawless with only the smallest sign of very
slight graying towards the blade tip. Klaas
is always a maker that is highly desirable
by type collectors due to the extra mile the
firm went with their enhancing, quality of
the materials used and general appearance of
their early production daggers. This one
comes from a period when the firm was
competing with other manufacturers for a
contract to supply the demand for daggers
from German Army Officers, hopefully this is
reflected in the pictures below, I can more
or less guarantee this dagger will not
disappoint.
