ITEM:
D105 A dagger from
Weyersburg and Kirschbaum or WKC that in
normal circumstances could be described as
in virtually mint condition. It does however
have some damage to the upper part of the
rear grip. It came to me in this condition
and looks as though the pommel has been
over-compressed at some point in the daggers
history. There is a very small chip and some
cracks but largely intact and would stay so,
if the pommel is left well alone. This is a
shame obviously as the rest of the dagger is
exceptional, retaining much of
original factory silver finish under a heavy
lacquer that is clearly evident to all the
fittings and especially the scabbard. The
dagger itself has the WKC 3rd tomahawk
crossguard that was used from around 1936
right through until around late 1941, they
can be found with numerous variations to the
fittings, including 12 or 14 leaf pommels,
single or twin screws to retain the scabbard
throat or type B or type C grips. This
particular dagger has a single screw
retaining the scabbard throat, the earlier
type B grip and a 12 leaf pommel. These
parts all suggest an assembly timeframe by
WKC of around 1937. The grip is noticeably
lighter to the rear than the front, all of
the hilt fittings have a wonderful dark and
consistent patina and all are extremely well
detailed, although by this stage in
production WKC had ceased hand enhancing on
these standardized fittings. The scabbard is
outstanding, the majority of the original
frosting or lacquer remains, with no dents
or damage. I would suspect that blade tang
is probably the earlier tapered tang variety
however, with a reluctance to turn the
pommel, this has never been confirmed. The
blade itself features a fully burnished WKC
trademark and is in factory condition with
full crossgrain and a needle point. In a
case or on a shelf this is a first rate
example of a German WWII Army dagger, only
let down slightly by the grip damage to the
rear, it has been priced accordingly.
