ITEM:
D103 An early
army dagger by ACS or Alcoso, this dagger
features a tapered tang blade that is not
maker marked for the firm, early Alcoso
scabbard and pommel and a lovely deep orange
toned grip. The fittings have developed a
nice coal dark patina from top to bottom and
the dagger is well matched with all
factory fitted parts. The blade also has the
bonus / addition of a distributors maker
mark ' Albert Kuhl. Munster I/W - Essen '
which would have been the firm that
originally retailed this dagger. The blade
is good with much of the original cross
grain intact, there are a few light water
marks and a couple of very slight edge nicks
to the blade, but generally very good. The
pommel is the 14 leaf variety, well chiseled
and detailed and is matched with a scabbard
from the same early period. This scabbard
throat is retained by two flat head side
screws typical of the ACS firm as are the
small well executed brass based scabbard
bands. There are a few minor dents evident,
mostly to the lower third of the scabbard
that has been slightly flattened but nothing
that majorly detracts and these have to be
looked for to be noticed. This dagger has a
lovely caramel toned grip which sits very
well and is complimented by the brass darkly
patina ad fittings. The early fittings and
tapered tang blade dates this dagger to
around 1936/7 and would have been one of the
first type 3 Alcoso's made by the firm. The
silvering to the rear crossguard looks like
it is bubbling in the macro zoom shot on
this dagger, it is not, it appears to be
under the plating and part of the casting
process. This
style of dagger from ACS was then is use for
roughly the next 4 or 6 years. A very nice
representative example with the bonus of a
distributors mark.
