ITEM: D103 This typical
Eickhorn German Army dagger has issues
although the fittings and configuration are
thoroughbred Carl Eickhorn, right down to
the ferrule. The grip is cracked, front and
back and the blade although very clean does
appear to be a little shorter than normal
which may point to a very well done re-tip
at some point.
What I find interesting about this
particular dagger is the golden tones to the
fittings which suggests a heavy silver
plating, this is contradicted by the blow
holes visible on the crossguard caused by
inferior base metals, used later in the
period to cut costs.
Not many makers continued to use such heavy
plate later in the war, they obviously
focused on presentation for the time and not
longevity, during this stage of manufacture.
Marked with the Carl Eickhorn 1935-1941
trademark to the blade, the scabbard is also
Eickhorn.
