ITEM: C105 Although unmarked
this German Army Officers dagger is almost
certainly manufactured by Holler. The
scabbard is Holler production with a single
centrally placed flush mounted screw and
typical Holler scabbard bands, the shell and
parts of the scabbard have a nice golden
tone from ageing of the lacquer over time
and is totally un-dented. The hilt fittings
are complicated in that they are based on a
design by E-Pack, however Holler also used
these parts and modified the fittings to
make them unique. ( See
cross-guard reference ). The cross-guard
on this particular dagger is the 4th type
used by Holler and features the circular
punched eye and modified chest weave to the
eagle typical of the firm. The base metal
appears to be aluminum alloy and the
fittings are very well detailed with some
pleasing wear to the raised areas reflecting
that this dagger was carried and cared for.
The matching pommel is hand chaste and with the same base materials and is
an excellent Holler example and the grip is
a nice tone with dark recesses and
un-chipped / un-damaged. The blade is
superb, full cross-grain down the entire
length with a couple of very minor areas of
light pitting hardly visible and a perfect
blade tip. This dagger configuration is
actually quite scarce with many examples
bearing un-marked blades, it is only close
inspection and comparison that reveals the
manufacturer.
