ITEM: C102 Here is an
exceptionally rare early dress bayonet
dating to around 1922-1925. This was the
pre-cursor to the Third Reich pattern KS98's
that evolved later in the period and is a
great example showing the evolution or
progression from the WWI and Weimar era
dress bayonets, with the small thin quillion and ebony grip plates to the later
more substantial bakelite grips and heavy
hilt fittings. This piece although unmarked
in all likelihood was manufactured by E-Pack
( due to the spanner bolt fixings on the
grip plates ) it is totally un-messed with
and in fantastic condition for such an early
example.
George Wheeler mentions this pattern KS98 on page 46 & 108 of his book "
History of the German Bayonet 1919-1945 ".
The majority of these Weimar produced
non-combat dress bayonets will be
non-fixable, i.e no working press stud or
rifle slot cut into the pommel in compliance
with the Geneva convention post WWI, this
one however does have a slot suggesting very
early production. The press stud is the
fixed non-working type. There are minor areas of
plating loss to the hilt, on the flash-guard
and around the fixing slot, the blade is
plated and wearing thin in some places but is generally good and the
scabbard ( note the circular early plate
under the retaining hook ) retains the
majority of its original paint along with
the original leather frog.
This is a very rare pattern early KS98 to source, in original condition
and from a period when Germany was in
turmoil.
